About US dollar
United States dollar is the official currency of United States. It is also legal tender in Ecuador, El Salvador, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Panama, East Timor and Zimbabwe.
US dollar is the most widely used currency in the world and it serves as de facto global currency, similar to how modern English language is used as universal global language. US dollar is integral to modern financial system and it is the reference unit of value in which most goods, services and financial instruments are priced. Most of the world's debt is priced in US dollars.
Due to its exchange rate strength and vast popularity, US dollar is used as alternative "underground" currency in countries where official currency is weak.
US dollar used to be exchangeable for physical gold. In 1971 gold standard was abandoned and US dollar became freely floating FIAT currency. Since that time US dollar has depreciated by approximately 85%.
