About Algorand
Algorand is open-source cryptocurrency created by MIT professor Silvio Micali. It was designed to be fast, secure and energy efficient.
Compared to Bitcoin or Ethereum, Algorand has an extremely fast transaction speed. This is, in part, due to its unique Byzantine agreement consensus protocol with much shorter block time than traditional proof-of-work coins. This makes Algorand great for real-time applications that require near instant transaction settlement. Additionally, it allows for low transaction fees as well, which is ideal for micropayment applications.
Algorand is governed by ALGO currency holders. Each quarter Algorand Foundation issues votes for stake holders (ALGO holders) to vote on. These proposals often revolve around further development of Algorand and its DeFi ecosystem.
